Never dive into a muddy pond, they say. You can’t see the bottom. This is true in philosophy as well. “Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.” (Colossians 2:8).
A muddy pond may seem deep, just like the “high-sounding nonsense” of human reasoning—but beware! Diving into it can cause dizzying confusion, and you won’t know which way is up or down. On the other hand, a clear pool may seem shallow. But don’t be fooled just because you can see to the bottom. The deepest truths of Christ can be clearly seen all the way to the bottom— go ahead and dive! It’s refreshing.
Ponder this: How can I stop diving into shallow muddy ponds and start diving into deep clear pools?
My prayer: Help me, Lord, to realize my need for the clear, deep teaching of your Word. How often I entertain “high-sounding nonsense” that’s shallow and confusing. May my mind be refreshed by You and You alone. Amen.
